Antikkens kongepaladser var både magtcentre og kulturformidlere: sociale mønstre og arkitektoniske rammer skabt af hoffet blev overtaget af aristokratiet og overklassen - og ofte kom nye udenlandske påvirkninger ind i samfundet på denne måde.
Det kongelige palads ses i denne bog både som bygning og som institution, og desuden som et mikrokosmos, som kan sige noget om fx forholdet mellem erobrer og erobret, udviklingen i monarkiets rolle og om gensidig kulturel påvirkning mellem øst og vest.
Paladsernes indretning og geografiske placering fortæller om typen af monarki og om kongens forhold til sine undersåtter. I det 1. årtusinde f.Kr. var der to store magtcentre, som især formåede at forbinde øst og vest: de hellenistiske riger og Achaemenideriget (Perserriget).
I bogen skriver en række internationale forskere om paladser og monarki i disse riger (også i nogle af de hidtil oversete områder som Armenien, Georgien og Albanien), og om før-Achaemenidiske paladser i Assyrien og Babylon, samt om Partherriget.
